To Whom It May Concern:
I am writing on behalf of the Waveland Animal Shelter and all animal relief efforts in Hancock County, MS, which took the brunt of hurricane Katrina in 2005. While the primary crisis of rescuing animals before, during and after Katrina has past, several secondary crises are emerging.
Because of a significant decrease in local veterinarians, rescue groups and shelters, feral animals are increasing rapidly. The Waveland Animal Shelter is constantly exceeding capacity; turning away captured or rescued animals. There is also a significant increase in heartworm infection with both dogs and cats. Finances simply do not exist to treat those already infects, with the animals put down at diagnosis. Distemper and rabies are looming threats that will only distress an already overwhelmed animal health care system.
The 2005 hurricane season is far from over.
Please assist in any way you are able.
Food, medications, medical care supplies, cleaning supplies, crates, collars, leashes, administrative supplies, foster care, and on-site volunteers are all badly needed.
